Home

I can remember being scared when I was younger
Scared that something from the darkness was going to come get me
Or that the darkness was going to swallow me up and
                                                                                                never
                                                                                                          spit
                                                                                                                me
                                                                                                                     out.

However,
As I have aged,
I have come to appreciate the quiet stars in the sky
All the crickets’ songs
The eyes of deer and coyotes watching me
And the sway of corn in the distance

I find myself missing that home.

                                                Living in a big city,
Where the sky is always bright
                                                                      …Cars are always honking
…Airplanes and satellites are mistaken for stars

Where instead of fearing the darkness,
I find myself fearing my fellow humans
Scared that someone from the darkness is going to come get me
And take me somewhere and
                                                                 never
                                                                           let
                                                                                me
                                                                                     out.
